Each cactus will form into a natural shape of five ridges. With your tapestry needle and a length of A, sew small stitches along each of the ridges to create a star.

Making up
Flatten the leaf with the palm of your hand. Place the leaf on some thick cardboard and draw around it with a pencil to make an outline. Cut out the cardboard shape just a little inside the outline. Place the cardboard inside the leaf. Using the tail of yarn, sew firmly to the soil and place in the pot.

Curly Jade Plant
Page 52
This is a very satisfying project to make. By increasing on every stitch in every round, you create a hyperbolic shape, which appears frequently in nature.

Making up
Weave a strand of floristry wire through the centre of the leaves on the wrong side. Arrange two large leaves to be opposite each other. Place another two large leaves at right angles, and sew on top. Repeat so all eight large leaves have been placed. Poke all the ends of the floristry wire on each strand through the soil and fold over the wire to secure. Sew the base of the two first large leaves securely to the top of the soil. Finally, place the two small leaves in the centre and sew them securely in place. Manipulate the wire to create a natural plant shape.

Weave in the stray ends of yarn B on each leaf. Poke the wire of each stem into the soil and then use the long tails of yarn A to sew the stems securely to the top of the soil. Sew a plain leaf at the end of each stem and then sew striped leaves evenly up the stem approximately six stitches apart, five on each small stem and seven on each large stem. Curl the stems slightly to create a natural plant shape.

Making up
On each petal and leaf, use the tail of yarn and a tapestry needle to make small stitches and gather the end of the petal or leaf together. Cut 18 pieces of floristry wire approximately 8in (20cm) long. Weave a strand of floristry wire through the centre of the petals and leaves on the wrong side. Arrange the flower petals so that five large red leaves form a star. Then position two small red petals opposite each other on top of the large leaves. Gather the petal wires together on the underside of the flower. Using the tails of yarn, sew the petals together.

In order to know where each round starts it is advisable to place a marker at the beginning of each round.

Puff stitch
The Crown Cactus pattern (see page 76) creates a puff by drawing several loops together and then making a sl st to secure.

3 Rep twice into the same st. You will have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all loops on hook. Make 1 sl st to secure.
